Hello, I did post this up at the end of 2017, but decided to remove it partly due to imposter syndrome and partly because it just didn't work too well under iOS.

Anyway, I've had a change of heart and have decided to put this up again.

Thanks to Vanja and Andreas of Pond software for allowing me to make and share this Pico-8 interpretation of their 8-bit C64 game. (Find it here: http://http://pondsoft.uk/splorf.html )

Also, a special mention must go to Paul Nicholas ( @Liquidream), who helped me solve some nasty bugs, Chris Donnelly (@gruber_music) for the awesome music/sound, Morgan McGuire (@casualeffects) who supplied me with some great particle code to play with. Also Justin Ray (@designinvan) and Urban Monk.

I hope some of you enjoy this simple little highscore chaser game.

CONTROLS:

X - to thrust or start game.
Z - for credits, story and info. (on title screen).

That's it.

Cheers,

Roy

Love the pixel art and music!

The game is simple but fun. I got 7200 points but I think I died because I got a little bored and reckless. Maybe it could benefit with some progression of sorts. The simplest way would be making it harder as you go (faster).

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I guess it could get a tad boring, but it IS just supposed to be a casual game you play for a few minutes.

The difficulty does slowly increase by the asteroids getting slightly faster and faster as time goes by. 7200 is a great score, btw.

I did initially plan on adding an additional arcade mode, so you could choose between casual and arcade on the front end.

Basically, arcade would allow you to shoot asteroids, get pick ups for fuel etc, but alas, I lost interest and released it as is, which is more faithful to the C64 version.

Maybe I could return to it as some point and release a new version with arcade mode. It is something we (POND) could maybe consider for the C64 too.

Good gravity game.
Music has overtones of the original BBC "Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy."
Here's the original. Very memorable.

The C64 version's music includes a tune that has elements of both the Hitchhiker's theme and Battlestar Galactica, which you can hear in this PICO-8 theme.
Great fun!

I heard the Hitchhiker's Guide theme too, and I know where my 42 towels are.
Edit: I happened to have that very book on my desk, in front of me, when I wrote this comment. Also, 42 and knowing where your towel is are jokes from that book. Oh freddled gruntbuggly...
