As usual, I come with a simple question, but end up with a long winded post Thanks for your help and advice
So I have a fairly old (4 years old) system with the following specs:
ASUS P5LD2
http://www.centralcomputers.ca/IntelMBSpecs/P5LD2Specs.html
Intel Pentium 4 at 3.00 GHz
I want to start using this computer (as a home web server), after making some upgrades.
Namely, I want to upgrade the CPU and the RAM.
I don't even know what the term "socket" means, so, before I go ahead and buy anything, I want to make sure that I'll get something that fits
------------
CPU
Essentially, I want to get the best processor that this MOBO will support, and that will not be overkill. (Since it's only rated to 1066 FSB).
Price range up to ~$150
Here is what I'm thinking now, any other suggestions are welcome:
Intel Pentium Dual Core E5300 Socket LGA775, 2.6 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 2MB L2 Cache, 45nm (Retail Box) (BX80571E5300)
Intel Dual Core E6300 Socket LGA775, 2.8 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB, 2MB L2 Cache, 45nm (Retail Box) (BX80571E6300)
Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 Socket LGA775, 2.93 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB, 3MB L2 Cache, 45nm (Retail Box) (BX80571E7500)
RAM
Thinking that the mobo supports up to 4GB, I bought 2 of these sticks:
Kingston ValueRAM 2GB 667MHz DDR2 Non-ECC CL5 DIMM
When I put them in, I left the 2 old 512 MB sticks in there (so now the system has 5GB ram in total); and booted up.
Everything loaded fine and Windows Vista 64x recognized full 5GB of memory.
Can I buy 2 more of these sticks and have 8GB in total??
