Direct Heals or HoTs?

With Wrath we earned Nourish, a spell that finally gave us a much needed direct heal. We also got Wild Growth a small AoE HoT that starts big then peters out. With 3.1 a lot of our HoTs are also getting some slight nerfing done.
So here's my two questions. For both raiding and heroics which would be better, a direct heal spec or a normal HoT one? Could I get some clues as to how to properly spec for either? I know HT is the 'oh crap' heal with NS but I feel that there's so much more potential to somehow, but I just don't know how to exploit it.
HoTs are great healing, but I'm the sole healer in my guild right now so i need to try a more paladin or priest method. ((I've yet to see a druid main healer a raid, though Sisters of Elune isn't a very big raid server from my experiences))
So anyway, My guild and I would be appreciative if someone would be so kind as to give me some information I could use to maximize my healing.

Where does this idea come from? In TBC Druids were absolutely incredible. Your statement makes me think we were the 4th string healer cause we couldn't Flash Heal... I hate this attitude. I'll agree that a quick direct heal has a place in the druid line up, and I'll agree that Nourish fills that spot quite well.
My problem is, Nourish has bred this whole new generation of Druids that have no clue how they're supposed to heal! They get Nourish at level 80 and assume that it must be "the heal I've been waiting for" when in reality, its just a cherry-on-top of our already incredible lineup of healing abilities.
HoTs are amazing, you just have to
trust
them... Example:
Good druid: DPS takes a chunk of damage, pop a lifebloom / rejuv / WG on them and go back to tank, knowing they will be full before they get hit again.
Bad druid: DPS takes a chunk of damage, un-target tank, spam Nourish until everyone is 100% whilst letting your rolling LB and all other HoTs expire on the MT. Retarget MT at 75% with NO HOTS ON HIM (because you fail) and then Spam Nourish and hope to hell he doesn't die before you can start re-HoTing.
Nourish should be used like this, IMO:
MT: Regrowth, Rejuv, LB, LB, LB. Keep these up at all times. If the tanks incoming DPS spikes, Swiftmend. If the incoming DPS spikes and
swiftmend is on cooldown
, Thats when Nourish comes out to play.
DPS: If one Nourish (with no HoT bonus) will top them off with very little overheal, then why not. Even in this case a Rejuv may be preferable, but thats just personal I guess.
=================
TL;DR: Druids should use HoTs, we have the best HoT's in game. If you're ever spamming Nourish, you're doing it wrong. Nourish should be a blessing that gives us something to do while swiftmend is down, not a curse that breeds wave after wave of fail healers.
