1) Lamb Chops! (2013): Here’s my first assembly game, written using the Merlin 48&64k disk. It’s an arcade game best described as a cross between Robotron and the hunting section from The Oregon Trail. You’re a sheep farmer and your flock has escaped from their fencing. Armed with a shotgun, you must protect them from the natural (and unnatural) forest inhabitants as they make their way home. You get extra men every 1,000 points. You lose a life by touching any creature (except the sheep) or by losing 3 sheep per level. The game gets progressively harder until level 20. If you make it that far you get a better game over screen when you die. Oh, and don’t shoot the sheep, friendly fire is enabled. Lamb Chops! will run on any Apple II with 64k memory.

Below is the link to the disk image which includes the source code. I wrote the game in about a month using Assembly Lines by Roger Wagner as my main resource. WARNING: This was my first assembly game so expect some sloppiness 🙂 Enjoy!

2) Retro Fever (2014): You play as an Apple II enthusiast trying to add to their collection. In other words, you play as you! Objectives include collecting the computers from a recycling center, fixing them in a repair shop, and protecting them from the yellowing effects of the sun! Standing in your way is an evil businessman who only wants the computers to resell on eBay for inflated prices! Other obstacles include reckless drivers, overgrown lab rats, and your angry wife who wants you to sell your “junk”. This game has it all!

This game was a collaborative effort between myself and Brandon Bogle of Retroswitch.com. Along with co-writing the game, Brandon was the architect of our development infrastructure and built a slick bitmap editor for us to create the characters and animations. Other tools used are the same ones I used for Lamb Chops! and include Electric Duet, Apple Mechanic, and Axe Packer to compress the background images. Retro Fever will run on any Apple II with 64k memory.
